Taby Davila is on a mission to bring inclusivity to the fashion industry. She is the founder of Shop Taby and is growing the business in the Master of Business Creation (MBC) program at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business.
Davila’s desire to belong and be represented through her everyday wear brought her attention to the sizing gap in the market. She said, “80% percent of the women’s fashion industry caters to sizes small through large while 68% of women in the U.S. are considered plus-size.”
This absence of options, along with her passion for fashion, sparked the creation of Shop Taby — an inclusive and empowering clothing brand, dedicated to providing a positive shopping experience to all women, while supporting their “Better Body Love” journey. This journey enables women to cultivate a positive relationship with their body and mind, by uplifting individuality.
Shop Taby provides vibrant, original designs that inspire confidence by offering an inclusive sizing range from XS to 5X, exceeding what most clothing brands carry. Davila is dedicated to her goal of expanding her size range to be even more inclusive by providing up to 12 different sizes to better serve the Shop Taby community.
Representation and belonging are things that Davila continues to advocate for her customers. “Those who have found us, come back because they feel seen, have found a community, believe in our mission, and see the value in what we’re doing,” she said.
Shop Taby’s has loyal shoppers like Angelica Tello, who said, “I love how she incorporates customer feedback. We get to be part of the design process each step of the way, from concept to final design.”
Giving back to the community is a priority at Shop Taby. As a minority, and a Dreamer immigrant, Davila understands the hardships of being an undocumented youth. Recognizing the educational barriers that she’s overcome led her to fundraise for Dreamers by creating a scholarship fund, which helps immigrant youth earn higher education and pursue a career.
“We designed the Dreamers Sticker Pack, where 100% of the proceeds go to the scholarship fund,” Davila said. Her experience as a Dreamer has inspired her to fundraise for the Latinos in Action Foundation, a local non-profit whose mission aligns with Shop Taby by inspiring Latino youth to continue their education through confidence, hope, and purpose. So far, the Dreamers Sticker Pack has funded three scholarships and Davila hopes to expand their efforts.
The MBC program has connected Davila with other entrepreneurs, helping to grow her business.
“I don’t personally know of anyone else who is a woman, a minority, and an immigrant that has done what I’m trying to do in business,” she said “The MBC network helps facilitate resources and connections that someone with my background may not have.”
Looking forward, Davila aims to provide wholesale services to boutiques that seek to embrace size inclusivity. Prior to the Shop Taby brand, Davila was a boutique owner challenged with the financial risk of being size-inclusive. Most suppliers don’t allow stores to try different size ranges without buying the items in bulk, making it difficult to see what sizes would sell in their stores. Davila said, “I think our mission can best be accomplished in wholesale by being that manufacturer that I didn’t see when I owned a boutique.”
Davila’s work will continue to build confidence and support women on their “Better Body Love” journey. By embracing the diversity of women’s bodies, Taby fosters a supportive space where every woman feels valued and celebrated.
